Paul Stanley: Live to Win (Oct 20, 2006)

Paul Stanley has released his second solo album after 28 years. "Live to Win" is considered as one of the most expected album of the year.

In this album, Paul refines his sound and moves into a lighter rock music direction like modern rock or power pop. The album was produced with the help of Desmond Child (Bon Jovi, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, Ricky Martin, Sakis Rouvas) and selected session players like the excellent black vocalist C.C. White, Macy Gray's drummer Victor Indrizzo, guitarist John 5 (who leaves his mark on “Where Angels Dare”).

"Live to Win" is the first song of the album. It seems quite reminiscent to "Have A Nice Day" but lighter with less guitar. "Lift" sounds like alternative rock song. The song has high level of complexity with many various melodic, notes, and chords. "Wake Up Screaming" has the slightly sound and feeling of Nirvana but in my opinion, done better in hard rock way. The song has great melody throughout the song. "Everytime I See You Around" is one of my favorite. This song has a very good melody, great memorable chorus, and beautiful solo. The song might be too light for hard rock fan. This is like another side of Paul. "Bulletproof" is faster and sound like Bon Jovi which seems to be a bit disappointed; however, the music is very tight and perfectly written. This proves that Paul can write any style of music he wants and he can write them better. "All About You" sounds more like Bon Jovi "Keep the Faith" but again in a better way. The sound of the song is much powerful and up-tempo feeling. "Second To None" is the slow soft song that sounds like soft rock in the 70's or 90's but harder. Paul has put an excellent lyrics into this song. "It's Not Me" is the fast song with a complex song structure. The song is very well mixed, great lyric, and superb sound. The song makes you want to sing along with it. "Loving You Without You Now" is the great love song in this album with heavy rock sound and shreded heart emotion. "Where Angels Dare" is another of my favorite song. The song has hard melodic guitar sound of John 5 which makes this song very memorable.

Paul has proved his ability to write each song in various musical styles. He does not afraid to step into his 'unknown' torritories, in fact, he surpasses those. He does not follow any kinds of music trends, he creates them!
