LORD TIM COMMENT ON HIS NEW BAND 'LORD' "IT'S NOT AN EVIL DICTATORSHIP"

Heavy Metal Nation recently caught up with LORD frontman Lord Tim, formerly of DUNGEON. Few excerpts are follows:

JCW: You developed the title ‘Lord Tim’ after a stint working as a DJ at a rollerdisco. Since establishing this, do you find after you have introduced yourself that you have to explain the story of how your name developed, so as they don’t think you are some kind of self-declared God?

LT: "Ah, most people who know me as 'Lord Tim' already know it’s a joke name and I usually just say 'Tim from Lord' or 'LT' to most people when I introduce myself professionally anyway. If anyone takes offence to the name or doesn’t understand it’s a joke, then they need to do some research or develop a sense of humour! Thankfully I haven’t had to explain the story for quite some time, so either we’re becoming more famous or people are caring less (laughs)!"

JCW: Since the beginning 17 years ago, apart from the many line-up changes and a change of projects (from Dungeon to Lord), how has your personal approach to the music making process changed?

LT: "Really, not a lot. I still do the bulk of my writing alone and usually flesh out the songs into complete arrangements before I even show them to the rest of the band. For me, when I write, I’m hearing everything right up to final production ideas (so stuff like hearing an echo on a certain word or orchestration over a song section and things like that). I’ve never really been the kind of guy who comes up with two small riffs and throws them out to the band and writes them with other people – that always feels counterproductive to me. Having said that, a lot of ideas do come out of pre-rehearsal jams that I take home to work on, and when I’m done, it’s usually taken to the other guys to get their opinions and ideas, so it’s not entirely an evil dictatorship (laughs)."

JCW: You released an album A Personal Journey which consisted of a collection of songs you didn’t feel appropriate for Dungeon. You released this primarily for yourself, and seemed a bit apprehensive of its success. How do you think it turned out? Have you had more fans jump on the Lord bandwagon since its release?

LT: "Well to be honest, it wasn’t pushed as hard as it could have been when it first came out and the sales were only a fraction of what I was getting with Dungeon – but I expected as much. That album was really for me more than anything, so even to have it out at all was a thrill. Since it was re-released when Lord became a legitimate band, the sales have been much better but we really haven’t been able to push it as hard as we would like because it’s not really representative of what we’re doing now. That’ll all change with the new album, though."

RICHARD WEST REVEALS DETAILS ON THRESHOLD NEW ALBUM

BW&BK recently caught up with THRESHOLD keyboardist Richard West to discuss the band's new album, Dead Reckoning. The following is a brief excerpt from the story that will appear in BW&BK #103, with West revealing how vocalist/producer Dan Swanö (EDGE OF SANITY, NIGHTINGALE) ended up doing guest vocals on the tracks 'Slipstream' and 'Elusive':

“Originally we were thinking of asking Anders Friden from In Flames but never actually got in touch with them," says West. "Then I heard the latest Soilwork album, Stabbing The Drama, which is a fantastic album - and I think Speed is a great vocalist - so I went to meet them when they played the UK to talk to him about doing the vocals. It was an amazing show, they were really nice guys, but Speed told me he had been guesting on so many things in the last year that he just couldn’t do any more. He was getting bad press because of it and his fans were saying he was spreading himself too thin so he turned us down, which is a shame because his voice would have been great on those songs. We reached the day before we had to mix and we still had no one; my demo vocal was in there, which was okay but nothing amazing. When we were in the studio, though, Clive Nolan from Arena popped in and suggested we try Dan, who was a friend of his. We didn’t know who Dan was but we decided to give it a go. Clive emailed him, Dan said it was fine and had Clive send him the files. The very next day Dan sent us 80 files with every different style of growling he came up with for those lines, especially for ‘Elusive’, which was amazing. We took the ones we liked best and added them to the songs. Dan is a great guy, and very professional on top of it all.”
