DOWNLOAD AT A MUSIC STORE?

High Street record stores have been feeling the pinch in recent years after competition from downloads and online companies.

Tower Records was forced to close its 93 music shops around the world. HMV set up its own online store last year.

Now Virgin's going one step further and installing digital download booths in all its new stores from next year.

But would you buy music downloads from a shop? Would it keep you going to High Street chains? Or is the end for the big stores?

Over the past 7 years CD sales have fallen over 25%, MP3 sales have risen but not enough to cover the fall in CD sales. The head of Song BMG said in late 2005 that by 2010 the music industry will be behind 30% in terms of revenues.

This downturn was not caused by illegal downloads, as many claim, many studies have been conducted on this and have found, "…an effect on sales that is statistically indistinguishable from zero". Music stores will have to diversify, I don't think selling MP3's in store is a good idea but it's going in the right direction.

Virgin will have a virus checker and will only allow limited access from the port you can download from. Just like when you're on a public computer or in a wifi-hotspot.

Over the past two years, Starbucks introduced a new program that leted customers listen to music downloads from 20,000 albums -- among them tunes by that 1960s band -- and burn their own customized CDs in store. Starbucks planed to add the service to 2,500 stores.

Consumers use HP tablet PCs to access the song lists at in-store listening stations. They can listen to the music and select tracks for their own personalized CDs, which take less than four minutes to burn, Schultz said. Starbucks, which has acquired licenses for the tracks, charge $6.99 for five songs and $1 for each additional song.

The Santa Monica coffeehouse, located in the former space of a Hear Music store, opens with 70 table PC-listening stations and a full Starbucks cafe. Smaller satellite stations has been incorporated into current Starbucks locations.
