LORDI "IF YOU LIKE KISS, COOPER, WE'RE YOUR NEW FAVORITE BAND"

Greg Prato from Billboard reports that Dressing up as ghoulish monsters is nothing new in heavy metal, but what sets Finland's Lordi apart from the majority of its predecessors is that the group made a splash with their music first by winning the 2006 Eurovision song contest. As a result, the group is fast becoming a sensation in its homeland and is gearing up for its first proper U.S. release, "The Arockalypse," due March 20 via the End Records.

"If you like Kiss, Alice Cooper, Twisted Sister and W.A.S.P., I think we're your new favorite band -- that is the simplest way to put it," vocalist Mr. Lordi tells Billboard.com. "It's nothing fancy, except kick-ass rock -- that's what it's all about."

The Eurovision contest is completely unknown to most U.S. music fans, and Mr. Lordi admits the group was told by some advisers that it would be "commercial suicide" to enter. "It is not something that a rock band -- not to mention a metal band looking like monsters -- should ever do," he says. "[But] we thought there's nothing to lose, because in the end, we're still playing our own songs -- so let's see what comes out of it. And surprise, surprise, we won the whole contest with the biggest amount of points the contest has ever had in 40 years. It has only brought us positive things."

As a result of the Eurovision win, Lordi has signed on with original Kiss manager Bill Aucoin, who helped the group ink its U.S. record deal. Could a full U.S. tour be far off? Mr. Lordi hopes so. "I keep my fingers crossed," he says. "I think and I hope that we're coming for promotional stuff, and [we'll] hopefully do some shows. [We're] just moderately trying to see if there is any demand for a band like us there."
