PETE TOWNSHEND WALK OUT OF INTERVIEW WITH HOWARD STERN

BBC news reports that:

THE WHO guitarist PETE TOWNSHEND stormed out of an interview when US DJ Howard Stern mentioned his 2003 police caution for accessing a pedophile website.

Townshend and singer ROGER DALTREY were waiting for the interview to begin when Stern's co-host began to talk about the "child pornography stuff".

The guitarist walked out, leaving his band-mate to complete the interview.

Stern later said he was "very sorry". Townshend left a reply on his website, saying: "Howard, let's have lunch".

The rock star was questioned by police in 2003 as part of the Operation Ore investigation into accessing child porn on the internet.

Townshend admitted using his credit card to look at a pedophile website for research into child abuse, but he denied being a pedophile.

He received a police caution, and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.

However, he was cleared of possessing indecent pictures downloaded from the internet.

'Dirty underpants'...

Wednesday's interview, on "shock jock" Howard Stern's satellite radio show, was supposed to promote The Who's new album, Endless Wire, which is released next week.

It is the first album the legendary rockers have recorded together since 1982's It's Hard, which topped the UK charts.

Stern's co-host Robin Quivers, claimed on air that Townshend would have walked out even "if we didn't bring that up. He's a real testy guy".

Daltrey leapt to his band-mate's defence, accusing Stern of "sniffing dirty underpants".

"Can you imagine you're accused of this stuff and then you're found not guilty? If you had to defend yourself through this stuff?

"The wounds are so deep on the man, and it's just tragic because he's got so much to offer."
